East Tennessee State University will kick off St. Patrick’s Day weekend with a free public Celtic Concert next Friday (March 14) at 7 p.m. in Bud Frank Theatre, Gilbreath Hall.
The Muses, a three-woman a cappella “powerhouse,” sings a mix of Celtic, traditional Appalachian, Americana and world music. Their repertoire covers a wide range and includes original compositions, spirituals, soul numbers and songs from Ireland and Scotland. Based in Asheville, N.C., The Muses have released two CDs, “Angel” (July 2003) and “Celtic Hillbilly Soul” (Jan. 2007).
Celtic Air promises “a high-energy performance of Scottish and Irish music with a ‘New World’ feel.” The seven band members – six fiddlers and one guitarist – have played together for the past nine years and have made six concert tours to Scotland.
Celtic Air was founded by former U.S. Scottish Fiddling Champion Jane MacMorran, who teaches Celtic music in ETSU’s Bluegrass, Old-Time and Country Music Program and directs the Appalachian, Scottish and Irish Studies Program, both of which are part of ETSU’s Center for Appalachian Studies and Services (CASS).
The concert is sponsored by CASS and ETSU’s Master of Arts in Liberal Studies Program.
