The ETSU Language and Culture Resource Center is dedicated to working to improve relations between the Hispanic Community and ETSU. To increase public awareness of the living and working conditions of farmworkers in the Untied States, the very people who are putting food on every American table, the group is participating in National Farmworker Awareness Week from March 31 to April 5.
On Monday from noon to 4 p.m. in Borchuck Plaza there will be information regarding the particular health issues related to farmworkers.
There will be information provided to students on what they can do to minimize the negative impact on workers due to long hours, pesticides, and substandard living conditions.
On Tuesday from 10 a.m. to noon a strawberry field will be replicated in Borchuck Plaza.
Teams will compete to fill a box of strawberries for a “cash prize.” This prize will be the amount paid to farmworkers for one box of strawberries in the amount of $1.45. In order to demonstrate how difficult it is to fill $50 worth of boxes, the group will calculate how many boxes it would take to reach that amount.
On Wednesday from 7-9 p.m. in Rogers-Stout Room 118 there will be a screening of the recently released production of Morristown: In the Air and Sun along with a question and answer session from some of the film producers and workers involved in the making of the film.
On Thursday in Borchuck Plaza they will be providing information and videos relating to the legal issues that constrain farmworkers from organizing for better working and living conditions.
