ETSU’s men’s and women’s track and field teams traveled to Knoxville, Tennessee, on April 8 and April 9 to compete in the Tennessee Relays.

Due to weather conditions, day three of the race was moved up to April 9 following the day two events.

Starting off with the women, freshman Lindsay Cooper (Charlotte, North Carolina) ran the women’s 100m hurdles with a new personal-best time of 14.15s in the second meet of her college career.

The women’s 800m broke two athletes’ personal records. Junior Jessica Lord (Morristown, Tennessee) finished with a time of 2:10.32, placing her at seventh by just a second’s difference behind the top five. Sophomore Julia Karsten (Old Hickory, Tennessee) came in at 2:14.92.

As for the men’s team, junior Phelani Maduwa (Parys, Free State, South Africa) finished the men’s 800m race in fourth place with a score of 1:49.55, which also set a new personal record.

The men’s 1500m race held true to the pattern of personal bests for the team, with senior Matt Scarr (Wamberal, New South Wales, Australia) holding a time of 3:49.96, freshman Evan Guzman (Franklin, Tennessee) holding a time of 3:53.03; and finally, sophomore Josh Krafsur (Fort Collins, Colorado) finishing with a time of 3:56.79.

Senior Colbie Williamson (Clyde, North Carolina) set a new personal best in the 1500m event with a time of 4:40.73, about five seconds faster than her prior personal record. Junior Genevieve Schwarz (Oak Ridge, Tennessee) also competed in the race, coming in with a time of 4:31.54.

Ending out the last day with a switch from the running, junior Mary Brown (Radford, Virginia) competed in the women’s discus throw. She threw over 12 meters with an effort of 40.09m. With this toss, Brown was able to advance her personal best by more than five feet.

Despite inclement weather, the men’s and women’s track and field teams managed to make the necessary adjustments and turn the Tennessee Relays into a success, shattering nine personal records on April 9 alone.
