ETSU hosted its fourth Wild & Scenic Film Festival on April 10.

“The thought for this festival is to expose people to outdoor adventure, and just beautiful landscapes; films about, you know, areas all over the world, to inspire them to action to help protect the environment,” said Kathleen Moore, the recently retired director of ETSU Sustainability. “So, that’s why we do it.”

The festival, which tours around the country, was hosted by ETSU’s Department of Sustainability and co-sponsored by the Department of Media and Communication. The festival was canceled in 2020 due to COVID-19, and this is the first year the screening was held virtually.

“We have about 200 films we preview and then we choose our own program,” said Moore.

All 14 films shown were short film ranging from three to 25 minutes, and they were made by filmmakers from all over the world. Two of the films in this year’s program are by local filmmakers. Former ETSU student Evan Cole Barnes’ capstone film “Redwoods and Daisies” was part of the lineup, as well as Associate Professor and RTVF Head Shara Lange’s film “Work Sticks.”

“This year we are asking for donations,” said Moore.

“We’re raising money for the Appalachian Resource Conservation and Development district,” continued Moore. “They are a non-profit group who works on preserving farmland, but also promoting backyard farms and teaching people how to grow their own food, and things like that.”

The Wild & Scenic Film Festival describes itself as “a festival by activists for activists,” and it aims to “inspire environmental activism and a love for nature–through film,” according to the festival’s official website.

This year’s films are available on-demand for five days after the screening, until April 15.

“This is one of our biggest programs, and we do it during Earth Month,” said Moore.
