From Madrid, Spain, Carla Garcia was a competitive swimmer and enjoyed running and biking with family before combining the activities together.

She moved to Miami at a young age and chose to attend ESTU based on the area and programs offered. “I love the area and what it offers. There’s always something to do.”

Before attending ETSU, Garcia earned a team first-place finish at the 2017 Spanish National Duathlon Cross Championship as well as Best All-Around Female Athlete in 2018-19 in high school.

“I think it has helped [Kinesiology] me prepare for competition,” said Garcia, who starts her days bright and early for practice. “Naps are important,” she joked when asked how someone manages studying in pre-med as well as training in an incredibly disciplined physical sport.

Garcia, now a junior, is double majoring in Kinesiology with her concentration in exercise science and health sciences as she is on her pre-med track.

Garcia, who is rather humble and not quick to brag on herself, hesitated to describe the biggest attribute that she brings to the team, “I wish you could ask my teammates this question, they could probably answer much better than me.”

After thinking about the answer, Garcia believes that she pushes the team to perform. “I think motivation is what I would say…I make jokes too, but I am not the funniest one.” She says while laughing.

Very excited for the ongoing season, Garcia talked about her time in the program, “At first there were some issues when I came here, but those are over now…I think that we will have a very good season.” The triathlete spoke highly of her teammates saying, “I think we will exceed our own expectations this year. They are high now, but we will go beyond those.”

You can see Garcia in action at the next women’s triathlon event on Oct. 16 in Huddleston, Virginia, for the East Regional Qualifier.
