Both ETSU’s men’s and women’s indoor track and field teams competed at the SoCon championships on Feb. 26 and 27 in Lexington, Virginia. 

On day one, ETSU won five podium finishes and was able to take 22 people to the finals on day two. 

The biggest win of day one came from the men’s distance medley relay team, who won gold on Saturday. The event has been a popular one for the Buccaneers, winning the gold for the third time in the last five years. 

The members of the winning men’s DMR team are freshman Evan Guzman (Franklin, Tennessee), sophomore Miguel Parilla (Knoxville, Tennessee), junior Phelani Maduwa (Parys, Free State, South Africa) and senior Matt Scarr (Wamberal, NSW, Australia). The winning race time was 9:51.15  

The men’s DMR team also beat Furman’s team by two seconds, which has won gold for the last two consecutive years. In addition to that, the team’s race time is the second-best in the SoCon history with the other time belonging to the 1979 ETSU Buccaneers. 

Senior Adam Bradtmueller (Sarasota, Florida) and junior Lindsey Stallworth (Knoxville, Tennessee) both won silver medals in their respective 3000m race. Bradtmueller finishing at 8:05.64 and Stallworth finished at 9:37.49 

The final two podium finishes were for third place. The women’s distance medley race team won bronze with a time of 12:26.61 the team consisted of freshman Rebekah Howard (Ashland, Kentucky), freshman Hannah Burkhart (Knoxville, Tennessee), junior Jessica Lord (Morristown, Tennessee) and senior Makayla Shaw (Jonesborough, Tennessee). 

On the field event, junior Mekayla Brown (Elgin, South Carolina) won the bronze medal in the triple jump and recorded a season-best of 5.57m. 

Day one of the race not only landed these podium finishes, but the Bucs had some PRs from Howard with a time of 2:17.94 in the women’s 800m event and freshman Nolan Johnson (Milliken, Colorado) with a time of 7.02 in the 60m dash.
