On Friday, Jan. 30, the ETSU women’s basketball team played against Southern Conference opponents, the Samford Bulldogs. With a winter storm on the way, the game was moved several times to ensure it happened on time while keeping everyone safe.

The game began with the Buccaneers already pumped up, scoring six points before the Bulldogs could score one. By the end of the first quarter, ETSU was ahead with a score of 13-8. Samford came out strong in the beginning of the second quarter, scoring points one right after the other. The lead was too great, and the Buccaneers ended halftime still ahead with a score of 23-14.

The second half of the match began with ETSU getting more points before Samford had the chance, pushing themselves further into the lead. By the end of the third quarter, the Buccaneers were ahead of the Bulldogs with a score of 36-22. Samford only got within nine points of ETSU the whole time.

The fourth and final quarter slowly degraded for the Buccaneers, with the Bulldogs shortening the score within three points of ETSU. However, the Buccaneers were able to hold on and pull out a win, with a final score of 53-44.

In an exclusive interview with Coach Mock, the head coach for the ETSU women’s basketball team, she was asked how she feels about the team’s season so far. She said, “I think the first ⅔ of the season was a bit up and down, in full transparency we weren’t playing consistently. There’s a learning curve, but lately we’ve found our stride.”

Coach Mock said, “We have to stay level headed, and we have a bigger perspective on what we’re trying to do.”

The ETSU women’s basketball team will play against another Southern Conference opponent, the Wofford Terriers, on Thursday, Feb. 5 at 7 p.m in Spartanburg.
