After losing its first Southern Conference match of the season, the East Tennessee State men’s tennis team has won six straight after defeating Wofford 6-1 Monday afternoon at the ETSU Tennis Center. With the win, the Buccaneers overall record now stands at 12-6, while they improve to 6-1 in the SoCon.
At No. 1 singles, senior captain Marcos Pavlovich was the victor of a 6-3, 6-3 decision over Kent Ball, while Alejandro Salazar garnered his sixth consecutive win with his victory over Lee Porter in the No. 2 slot also in straight sets, 6-3, 6-1.
Wofford’s Brandon Smith saved the Terriers from being swept by knocking off junior Diego Iglesias at No. 3 singles. Iglesias dropped the tough three-set dual to Smith, 4-6, 6-3, 6-3.
Fernando Fiuri remained undefeated (7-0) in the Southern Conference by defeating Wofford’s Brett Johnson 6-3, 6-2 at No. 4 singles. Moises Serrano took care of Chris Barlow 7-6, 6-2 in the fifth position and Federico Ochoa captured a 7-5, 6-3 win at No. 6 over the Terriers’ Jason Mengel.
ETSU swept the doubles matches, but were tested at the No. 1 position as Pavlovich and Salazar barely escaped with a 9-8 victory against Ball and Porter. Iglesias and Serrano snapped out of a two-match slump with their 8-4 decision over Mengel-Smith, and the duo of Ochoa-Fiuri handed Wofford’s Barlow-Johnson an 8-3 loss to complete the trifecta.
