“What is there to do around here?!”
You probably asked that question when you first set foot in our beloved metropolis of Johnson City. I know I sure did.
While serving this past year as Student Government Association vice president, I had the opportunity to meet many of you. It was then that I realized I was not alone in the quest for something to help pass the time here. When I’m not diligently studying, of course.
So, what do I write about?
I am an outdoorsman who is addicted to fishing, but I have a feeling you would like to learn about places other than the best spots to outsmart a cold-blooded animal whose diet consists of things you see on Fear Factor.
Obviously, my area of expertise is in the different outdoor recreation opportunities this area has to offer.
Over the next 15 weeks or so, I will share many of my favorite locations with you. I will also share with you a few restaurants and cozy little spots that I think you will enjoy.
However, I’m willing to broaden my horizons. I also would like to know what you are interested in learning about this region.
Perhaps you have seen some roadside attraction, like when you made that wrong turn the other day and didn’t realize it until you saw the “Welcome to North Carolina” sign – not that something like that has happened to me, of course. Maybe there’s a particular activity you enjoy, like shopping, antiquing, photography, bingo, water polo … the possibilities are endless.
I will do everything I can to help you find something fun. I want you enjoy your free time at ETSU as much as I have.
However, my time here is coming to an end. I graduate in December, so if you’re looking for something in particular, let me know soon.
Drop me a line at JustDownRoadETSU@aol.com and give me suggestions, comments, feedback, questions, or just say, “Hey.” I always enjoy hearing from y’all.
I can’t guarantee I’ll be able to feature about everything I get from you in my columns, but I will answer your questions.
I hope your semester is getting off to a fantastic start! I’m looking forward to the next several months with you. Until next time, I’m going fishing!
