Your dad played football, your brother played football and coaches football, and the dinner table sounds more like an NFL war room on draft day, so what’s left for you to do other than to be an All-American in baseball?
Maybe not the most likely of stories, but it is the road that ETSU baseball star Caleb Moore took to get where he is today as the new face of Buccaneer baseball.
Last year Moore led the nation in hitting with a .455 avg. while also leading the nation in doubles per game. All his numbers led to him being named Southern Conference Player of the Year and named second-team All-American. During last season, Moore had an 11-game run where he had at least two hits in each game. He ended the season on a 21-game hitting streak.
“Everything was just clicking,” said Moore. “It seemed that everything was just in slow motion.”
Despite having one of the best statistical seasons in ETSU history, Moore is still quick to put the accolades back to his team and his coaches.
“Probably the biggest factor in the season I had was Coach Skole and the rest of the coaching staff,” Moore said. “Working hard and getting input from the coaching staff made all the difference in giving me the confidence to have the year that I did.”
Moore was chosen as a preseason All-American this year, so there is bound to be a ton of pressure added on to this year, right? Not according to Moore.
“There is no more pressure this year than in last year,” he said. “I just want to go out and have another great year.”
ETSU as a program is definitely on the upswing with a ton of young talent, and this was what attracted Moore to play baseball here.
“The sky is the limit for this team,” he said. “This is the most talent that I have ever played with. There are a lot of very promising young guys on this team.”
Sports are something that you are raised on. They aren’t just a pastime for many people. They are a way of life.
It is a feeling that you get when it is time for that first day of the baseball season to come. Maybe it’s the smell of the grass or the sun on your face. Maybe it’s the sight of all the excited fans in the crowd cheering toward a common purpose and the kinship that is developed in hometown fans. Most likely it is all of these things.
A love for sports is something that is in Moore’s blood. Even if he wasn’t playing baseball, he would want to be involved with sports in some way.
“If I was not playing baseball, chances are I would still be doing something involved with sports management,” he said. “In the future I would love to get into coaching baseball.”
This looks to be a very big year for ETSU baseball, and Caleb Moore is leading the charge.
Write that name down, because you will be seeing it again – every time you look in the ETSU record books.
