Dear Editor,
One of the biggest things that bothered me about Daniel Crespo’s article on baseball was that he says, “The New York Yankees went out and got the best free agents money could buy.”
I wonder what he is basing this statement on, because I’m sure he knows that Randy Johnson was not a free agent and he was traded for. So is he talking about the aging Tino Martinez, the lifetime .274 hitter Tony Womack, the injury-plagued Jared Wright, or Carl Pavano, whose career record is 57 wins and 58 losses?
I wouldn’t exactly call these the best free agents out there.
Also, Randy Johnson will be in New York at the price of $32 million for the next two years, not the $16 million stated by Crespo. Moses Alou’s contract is worth $13.25 million, but it is for two years, not one, which was also stated.
I understand though that the article was written as an opinion and not for facts.
With that in mind, how can you claim baseball is a joke just because of the salaries?
Have you seen any recent NBA contracts? Shaq makes over $27 million a year.
Have you seen any recent NFL salaries? Michael Vick’s recent contract is worth $130 million over the next 10 years. It is not just baseball (or the Yankees) that have gone money crazy.
However, I think these players are worth every penny. They put their bodies through immense hardships, stay away from their families seven months out of the year, and bring great joy to countless people.
So if you’re tired of hearing about baseball, change the channel.
