For this who would rather stay in and watch DVDs than see one of Hollywood’s next excuses for a movie in the form of a theatrical release, October is the month for you.
The month that is associated with Halloween has a little of everything for everyone. DVDs in October range from horror and thriller to family and children (or at least the child inside some of us). Die hard fans of “Special Edition” DVDs will also get their share of movies to snag up.
Oct. 4. The biggest DVD coming out this day is Disney’s release of Cinderella for the first time on DVD. Two versions of this DVD will be released on the same day, one having more features and, obviously, costing more money. Included on both versions will be a brand new documentary on the making of Cinderella which includes deleted scenes and a storyboard-to-film sequence of the opening of Cinderella. It also includes two reconstructed songs, ESPN Classic Cinderella sports tales, and a sneak peak at Cinderella 3.
Also released today are: The Amityville Horror staring Ryan Reynolds and Melissa George, and Special Editions of The Fly and The Fly 2, the original 1980’s version of The Fog and The Warriors.
Oct. 11. A sleeper hit, a hit that turned in a bomb and a family comedy with “Da Coach” comes out today. Jet Li, Morgan Freeman and Bob Hoskins star in the sleeper hit Unleashed. Besides being released in an unrated version there is nothing special about this DVD.
The highly hyped and widely advertised Kingdom of Heaven is released. While grossing over $150 million overseas, Kingdom of Heaven barely made $45 million here. Nevertheless, the DVD offers a history vs. Hollywood documentary of Kingdom of Heaven, behind-the-scene features and more.
The Will Ferrell movie Kicking and Screaming comes to DVD. Outtakes, deleted scenes and “the making of features” fill with DVD with goodies.
Also released today are the following: The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air Season 2, Arrested Development Season 2, South Park Season 6 and The Jefferson’s Season 4.
Oct. 18 is the day for DVD lovers. It is also the for “Bat” lovers. Warner Brothers is releasing all five Batman movies at once. First off is the release of Warner Brothers’ summer smash, Batman Begins. The DVD will be released in a normal DVD and deluxe edition. The deluxe edition includes features on the monorail chase scene, the new Batsuit, the new Batmobile and a feature which the many incarnations of Batman from the mid-80s to now. Also included is a new 72-page comic which features three Batman comics that inspired Batman Begins.
In box set form and sold separately are the previous four Warner Brother Batman films, Batman, Batman Returns, Batman Forever and Batman and Robin.
Each film will contain heroes and villains gallery, a music video for each movie, director’s commentary, documentaries on aspects of the film and much, much more. This anthology is a dream come true for many Batman fans. Also coming this day are the following: Batman Begins, The 1943 Collection, Land of the Dead, a special edition of The Big Lebowski, Saw, The Mask of Zorro, Tarzan, The Emperor’s New Groove and Season 1 of the original 1983 He-Man and the Masters of the Universe cartoon.
Oct. 25. October ends relatively quiet compare to its start, yet there is still one huge movie coming out, a collector’s edition (which will include 3-Disks) and a special edition (2-Disk) of The Wizard of Oz will be released. Both DVDs will include theatrical trailers, character bios, and documentaries on the Wizard of Oz legacy. However the collector’s edition will contain animated shorts and features of early versions of The Wizard of Oz, and collectible items related to the Wizard of Oz. If you are truly a fan of Oz, this is the DVD for you.
Also for the first time ever, a special edition of Titanic comes out. The DVD will feature an alternate ending and 29 never-before-seen, deleted scenes. It will also feature the music video to the smash single “My Heart Will Go On” by Celine Dion. Also out on DVD: Bewitched, House of Wax, Herbie: Fully Loaded, Tales from the Crypt Season Two, Alias Season Four, In Living Color Season Four, 3rd Rock from the Sun Season Two, Bewitched Season Two, and finally The Munsters Season Two.
