Dear Editor,
It seems like every time I read “Letters to the Editor” I see a letter about whether or not homosexuals should be allowed to marry. I think it is absurd that there are still people who don’t believe that any couple, providing that they are in love and want to spend the rest of their lives together, should be allowed to marry.
The only people from whom I have heard that homosexuality is wrong (ick factor aside) base it on the teachings of the Bible. That is the most hypocritical thing I’ve ever heard. If we’re all supposed to live our lives the way the Bible tells us to (I’m not even going to address the people who aren’t Christian and therefore don’t care if the Bible condemns homosexuality, because apparently they don’t matter) then I believe we’ve got bigger problems than homosexuals marrying.
For starters, let’s talk about the people who are so viciously against homosexual marriages and then proceed to tell others why they can or why they can’t be married.
I suppose the Bible thumpers against homosexual marriage have conveniently forgotten about the whole “Judge Not Lest Ye Be Judged” thing, right? It’s not their place to tell anyone what they should or shouldn’t do in their lives.
I suppose that we should kill those who commit homosexuality too, right? That’s what the Bible says we should do. Leviticus 20:13 clearly states (although I’ve noticed that Lauren Grim conveniently left out the last bit) “If a man also lie with mankind, as he lieth with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination: they shall surely be put to death; their blood shall be upon them.” Let’s just ignore that whole “Thou shalt not kill” bit too, since we’re picking and choosing from the Bible what we want to obey.
Let me ask some questions to those who don’t believe that homosexuals shouldn’t be allowed to marry, if they wish so. What makes you so important, so special, that you get to judge other people’s actions and tell them what they can or cannot do? What makes you so special that your decisions based on your personal beliefs should dictate the lives of people whom you have never met and most likely will never meet?
What makes homosexuals so insignificant and unworthy of happiness? Why is it OK for you to disobey the Bible and not OK for others?
Lastly, why don’t you let God do the judging and take care of your own lives?
