Dear Editor,
Two letters in the last paper complained bitterly about its content, asserting that not only should articles not discuss what is “appropriate attire” but also that the newspaper isn’t for “whining.” The “appropriate attire” piece was what is known as an “opinion” piece and as such is a totally legitimate subject for this paper. Nobody is being forced to agree, and personally, I find it refreshing that some of the writers of the East Tennessean are actually trying to make the paper an interesting read by expressing a specific view.
As far as the complaint about the whining article by Robert Prowse – doesn’t Andy Rooney whine every week on 60 Minutes? Is there not place for whiny entertainment in this paper?
Maybe Mr. Prowse wanted to make us all feel as if we weren’t alone. I think he has often used the East Tennessean as a forum for such gifts of empathy.
And isn’t Robert Prowse one of the ones who has brought us a great deal of other quality articles about interesting events both near and far? If one has a criticism, give a solution to the presented “complaint.” It’s so easy to point the finger – but it’s hard to put yourself out there. If the contributing writers of the East Tennessean were to respond by censoring themselves and trying not to offend or annoy, it would be a bland thing indeed.
Carry on!
Mira Gerard
