The ETSU women’s tennis team took on conference opponent Campbell University today in Buies Creek, N.C., and claimed a convincing 7-0 victory.
The Lady Bucs now improve to 3-1 in conference play. The Camels fall to 14-4 and 5-3 in conference play.
In doubles play ETSU got out to a strong start in the No. 1 and 2 positions.
Yevgeniya Stupak and Elena Volobueva won the first doubles match against Ana Suriladze and Nina Suriladez in the No. 2 position 8-4, while Masha Ilina and Olya Batsula secured the doubles point for ETSU winning in the No. 1 position 8-4 over Scarlet Alfonze and Blanca Saenz.
In the No. 3 position Tara Byrne and Vita Moskaliova fought to a tiebreaker before eventually falling 9-8 (5) to Iva Stojancer and Liza Bensimon.
In singles action Volobueva took a convincing win in the No. 5 position defeating Bensimon 6-0, 6-2. Stupak put ETSU up 3-0 in the match defeating Saenz 6-1, 6-1 in the second position, and it was sophomore Byrne who secured the victory for the Lady Bucs with her win at No. 4 over Stojancer 6-4, 6-2.
Closely following Batsula got through a close first set before putting her opponent away decisively in the second.
She won 7-6 (2), 6-0 against Suriladze in the third slot. Ilina was successful in her three-set match in the top spot for ETSU, defeating Scarlet Alfonzo 3-6, 6-0, 7-5. Moskaliova made sure of the 7-0 win for ETSU as she battled through a third-set tiebreaker and came out on top. She defeated Surviladze 6-1, 1-6, 7-6 (5).
“We played well today and I am really happy with the win. Campbell is a good team,” said head coach Steve Brooks.
“If we keep building on what we did today, we will be in good shape come conference time.
