Dear Editor,
I note that bringing back football to ETSU seems to be picking up support. However, as I have said in the past, if ETSU wants to have support of the new football team, should football be restarted there, it MUST, it MUST, it MUST (did I say “It MUST?!”) play against Southeastern Conference teams, Atlantic Coast Conference teams, the University of Memphis, Pac-10 teams, Army, Navy, Air Force and other such well known teams.
Even if ETSU was steadily losing against such teams, students there and fans in that area would still come out to see the major teams and the program would be, I predict, at least a financial success. If ETSU continues to play “Podunk College” and “Aintneverheardofit University” (pardon my humor — that is, less well known teams), as has happened in the past, nobody will care and the stadium will be mostly empty.
I think that ETSU needs to either play major university teams (SEC, ACC, etc.) in which people are interested or it needs to drop to NCAA Division III in all sports in order to save money.
