Dear Editor,
I want to let the readers know that, as a student, I am often very busy and have not been available to participate in the football debate as much as I would like. The truth is that I really don’t care about football at all, but I do not want to fund it.
Apparently, no one cared about ETSU football before, so I am confused as to why anyone thinks that has changed??? Hype? I do not want to take out loan money to pay for some sport program that has nothing to do with me or my education. Why should I have to pay interest on a loan for football? That makes no sense.
I am angry that this is being shoved down our throats like this. The administration and alums seem to have already made up their minds about this a long time ago. I just don’t feel fooled. I do not want to pay more money. If the funds can be secured by means other than making students pay more, then football it is, but if the student body has to build that ugly stadium (referring to the architectural rendition printed in the ET) and pay for scholarships and the like, I say NO WAY.
Higher education is expensive enough. We just do not need a football team, or a Homecoming either. This money and energy should be invested in academic endeavors rather than games. How can Americans be competitive in the world when a game is more important to us than a war? I just do not understand this mentality. We cannot continue to afford to be so ignorant, even if we come up with the cash! My alternative suggestion is to support Science Hill’s football team, or any local high school’s football team instead. Why not?
