Public Safety is encouraging students to be careful on campus and to utilize the escort services available at night after a student was assaulted on campus Monday night.
The female resident, who was not injured, was assaulted before 10 p.m. near Lucille Clement Residence Hall.
“The alert pretty much says what happened,” Jack Cotrel, assistant vice president for ETSU’s department of safety and security, said Wednesday.
The alert stated that the assailant was approximately 6 feet tall and wore all black clothing and a clown Halloween mask. The assailant was carrying a small knife.
“We are following any and all leads that we get,” Cotrel said. “We will continue to investigate this to the best of our ability.”
Public Safety has several options available to help students to stay out of harm’s way.
“We strongly recommend that our students use well-lighted areas when possible, not walk alone whenever possible and utilize our escort services every time they are uncomfortable going from a parking lot to our building or to a dorm,” Cotrel said.
Public Safety officers are on 24-hour patrol of the campus. The department also operates a night patrol from 11 p.m.–5 a.m. each night in the vicinity of the residence halls and residence hall parking lots. These individuals are not police officers but are equipped with two-way radios and wear uniforms. Their duties include checking for propped doors, checking locked doors, watching for any unusual event, and checking parking lots.
Students, faculty and staff who need an escort can call Public Safety at 439-6900.
Anyone with information about Monday’s assault is encouraged to call Public Safety at 439-4480.
