In defense of Obama
Dear Editor,
I was reading Andrew Stearn’s article which bashed Barack Obama as nothing more than a naive political neophyte. I was rather incensed at some of the remarks he made and I would like to set the record straight.
First, it should be noted that Clinton and Obama are not the only ones who spend millions on political advertising; Republicans are just as guilty as the Democrats. The sad truth is that Americans are lazy and the only way to reach most of them is the same way Pepsi does; advertising.
It should be noted however that Mr. Obama does not take any money from lobbyists, and he was able to set a record for fundraising in January.
I think this speaks volumes about how his message is affecting people. And if you are afraid of theatrical icons spending millions, you need not look any further than Gov. Romney who is practically buying the presidency with his own personal wealth estimated at nearly $250 million.
I also failed to understand why Mr. Stearns mocked Obama for his belief that terrorism is one of the biggest threats to America. We are still dealing with the effects of the 9/11 attacks, and another incident of that scale could do considerable damage to our already weak economy.
Nearly all candidates agree on this fact, and think Obama’s views on national security are refreshing and intelligent and represent a sea-change in Democratic thinking on the subject.
Finally, I think Obama’s lack of experience in the ugly partisan politics of Washington is a good thing. Obama is a self-made man, with genuine principles and integrity. He has shown throughout his campaign that he is the only candidate that really has America’s best interests at heart.
And if you don’t want to vote for Obama because he lacks experience think about all the experience Dick Cheney and Donald Rumsfeld had. Both of them had been around since the Nixon administration, but they are the ones who got us into the mess we are currently in.
Obama has managed to build a wide body of support all across the political spectrum, and I think that he is the best candidate to deal with the problems that have been caused by our current president and his fantastically inept administration.
