Singer and songwriter Cosy Sheridan will be at Brown Hall Monday at 7 p.m. to perform her award-winning show, “The Pomegranate Seed.” Through this one-woman act, Sheridan will present a message on body image by retelling a Greek myth.
“The Pomegranate Seed” is a combination of monologues and songs that inspire women to overcome the media’s negative messages. Sheridan uses the story of Persephone, who was abducted to the underworld and forced to eat a pomegranate seed so that she couldn’t escape.
In Sheridan’s version, Persephone falls in love with a biker and learns how to turn the seed of death into her revival.
Sheridan’s performance is sponsored by the Counseling Center. They are trying to promote National Eating Disorders Awareness Week at the end of February.
The “Pomegranate Seed” is not just aimed at women.
“Men can benefit from attending the performance as well, since they are probably involved in a relationship with someone who is struggling with body-image issues,” said Kristen Dickens, graduate assistant in the Counseling Center.
Additional sponsors of Monday night’s show are Buctainment, Mountain States Health Alliance and Frontier Health. MSHA and Frontier Health are members of the Eating Disorder Coalition.
“There organizations are trying to address the issue, not only providing treatment but also getting involved in prevention,” said Dickens.
The Counseling Center recommends visiting Sheridan’s Web site at www.cosysheridan.com to get a better preview for Monday night’s performance.
Next month, the Counseling Center has planned a candlelight vigil, the fifth annual “Take Back the Night.
