On Mar. 1, 2023, the Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies (WGSS) program will host Nancy Donoval as she presents “Storytelling for Social Justice: Transforming the Therapeutic Survivor Story into an Advocacy Story.”

Professor Nancy Donoval won the first ever National Story Slam Championship in 2010 with her work “The Road to Shameless.” She will be sharing her tips and advice on sharing her story with the public and college audiences.

Nancy Ann Donoval is an assistant professor and Storytelling program head at ETSU. She has experience with training in trauma, including Healing Story Facilitation Training and Sexual Violence Prevention Effective Responder Training. She performs as a keynote speaker and a workshop leader, also contributing to several recordings, publications and commentaries. She has been teaching since 1995.

According to her website, “With a special affinity for finding humor in the hard stuff, Nancy tells stories about moments that change us: first kisses and lost love, bigamist great-grandfathers and dancing rats in Paris, the untimely death of a parent and a childhood field trip to the bathroom of the opposite gender. Her work explores the way memory shapes our sense of self – how stories rise from the compelling human need to give voice, to name our experience so that we can understand it.”

The “WGS on Wednesdays” series is designed to raise awareness about the research, scholarship and community engagement conducted by those across the gender spectrum at ETSU. This can provide students with a way to connect with mentors for their studies and a support group for issues and their own works.

The event will be held on Zoom, the Meeting ID being 817 3675 0048. For more information, contact Dr. Judith Slagle, interim director of Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies at ETSU, at 423-439-4125.
