The Buccaneer Investment Fund (BIF) is an up and coming student-run fund used to learn the ins and outs of investing. As one of few student run funds in the state of Tennessee, it offers a valuable opportunity to the students of ETSU.
Dr. Noland and the Board of Trustees granted $100,000 to the fund to start their investments. “We have a fund that we invest in public stocks. Anything that trades on the open market, we can buy,” said Milind Chaturvedi, co-founder and co-president of the Buccaneer Investment Fund.
The tentative plan is for 50% of the returns made to be reinvested and 50% to become scholarships for students in the College of Business and Technology.
The club has six analyst groups including tech, industrials and finance. The groups will create investments and present them to the entire club to be voted on. Stocks will be bought and sold based on the votes of the club members.
The BIF will meet weekly, alternating between whole club meetings and analyst group meetings.
“It is perfect for people who want to get into high finance. Everything we do in the club is modeled after how banks work,” said Chaturvedi.
The BIF is accepting new members and no experience is needed. The club is open to any major and will provide training. Chaturvedi added the only requirement is a willingness to learn.
The experience the BIF provides is incredible, as the best practice is with real funding. “Getting internships and jobs in business is very difficult and having something like this on the resume is unmatched,” said Chaturvedi.
The BIF is finalizing the details as they begin their first year as an organization. Chaturvedi noted the hard work of the Executive Team including Yusuf Sulaiman, Gavin Conway, Hunter Inancsi and Hunter Turgeon. He also thanked Trent White for his help in advising.
