On Tuesday, March 10, the Master of Social Work (MSW) Student Association collaborated with Texas Roadhouse to hold a donation night. The donation night allowed anyone who wanted to support the graduate students to donate 10% of their total food purchases to the proceeds of their upcoming advocacy trip.
The MSW student association works diligently throughout the year to help those who are in need. Giving back to the community and being there for everyone is their main goal. By volunteering for Second Harvest Food Bank, hosting food drives, and supporting local hospital patients, the graduate students have lent a helping hand to the region.
On March 24-25, MSW attended the Social Work Day on The Hill located in Nashville, Tennessee. The annual legislative event collaborates with other university social work programs in Tennessee.
This advocacy trip gives these MSW students the chance to actually have an impact on the communities and populations they work with. They met with legislators and continue to advocate for and against certain bills that will heavily impact those who go unspoken for.
Taylor Leonard, graduate student and president of MSW, expressed much excitement for the trip. The graduate students will speak up for those who do not have a voice in these settings by being able to speak directly to legislators, who get to see bills that pass through the state.
“Especially in today’s political climate, we have a lot of populations that are being silenced and pushed to the side,” Leonard said.
