The Tipton-Ashe Gallery is featuring “Trillium: Ceramics by Mat Wheeler” at the Vault Gallery, with the main gallery featuring “Wedged: Formed Earth” curated by Wheeler. The Vault Gallery exhibition journeys through Wheeler’s work during his time at East Tennessee State University. This display centers on forms inspired by vases, mugs, and teapots.

“I chose Trillium as a title because of the flower’s relation to the area and time. Since living in Johnson City, the stunning nature of spring always brings me an exquisite sense of beauty and joy,” said Wheeler in a statement for the show. “Receiving the cascades of flowers after the humdrum of winter is memorable and something I excitedly anticipate.”

His solo exhibition is available for viewing in the Vault Gallery and the main gallery until Thursday, April 2.

“Furthermore, the Trillium is a combination of three’s, which I find fitting for this show. While I don’t envision my work as ephemeral, I do see changes happening through the cycles of making, akin to that of seasons,” said Wheeler.

“Wedged: Formed Earth” focuses on the practice of wedging clay in ceramics. There are several artists featured in the exhibition.

“I am very proud of the show that I curated in the main gallery, ‘Wedged: Formed Earth.’ I recommend visiting that show, it contains a wide-ranging expression of works that are made from clay and can provide inspiration through its variety of expressions,” said Wheeler.

Both shows are available for viewing at the Tipton-Ashe Gallery, located at 401 Ashe St, Johnson City, TN 37604. Public viewing hours are available 11 A.M. to 3 P.M. on Wednesdays and Saturdays, and from 5 to 7 P.M. on Thursdays and Fridays.
