Halloween is here, Bucs, and this year’s celebration comes with an added bonus: ETSU Homecoming.

With a weekend full of events and celebrations ahead, students have plenty of opportunities to enjoy themselves. However, whether attending a party, dressing up or spending time with friends, safety should remain a priority.

For students planning to go out, using the buddy system is one way to stay safe. Going out with friends, checking in with one another and making sure everyone has a safe way home can help prevent dangerous situations.

Another important consideration is responsible alcohol consumption.

Students who choose to drink should know their limits, avoid accepting drinks from strangers and never leave beverages unattended. Those younger than 21 should not consume alcohol.

Most importantly, never drink and drive.

Drunk driving remains a serious safety concern, particularly during holidays when more people are attending parties and celebrations. Students who have been drinking should arrange a ride with a sober friend or use a rideshare service such as Uber or Lyft.

Costume safety is another consideration during Halloween celebrations.

Students should choose costumes that allow them to see clearly and move comfortably. Costumes that obstruct vision or make walking difficult can increase the risk of accidents.

Those walking at night should remain visible to drivers by carrying a flashlight, using well-lit sidewalks and paying attention when crossing streets.

Students should also consider cultural sensitivity when choosing costumes. Outfits that rely on harmful stereotypes or make light of someone’s culture or identity can be offensive. Halloween offers plenty of opportunities for creativity without disrespecting others.

Staying aware of personal surroundings is also important.

Students should be cautious about sharing their location or personal information on social media, especially when attending parties or traveling between events.

Keeping a charged phone nearby, staying in contact with friends and knowing where to seek assistance can help students respond if a situation becomes unsafe.

ETSU Public Safety is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, at 423-439-4480.

With a little planning and awareness, students can enjoy Halloween and Homecoming while looking out for themselves and one another.

Happy Halloween and Homecoming, Bucs!
