The ETSU’s Student Health Center will be hosting a booth recognizing national Kick Butts day that coincides with ETSU department of public and allied health’s Wellapalooza Carnival of Health.
The Bury the Butts booth will be located in the Amphitheater today from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
“Students will ‘Bury the Butt’ by dumping butts collected on campus and the surrounding community along with tobacco merchandise, into a 3-foot coffin,” health educator Barbara Knight said.
The booth is a part of a Public Health Fair hosted by the department of public and allied health, the Counseling Center and Student Health Services.
“Prizes will be given for collecting the most butts and for pledging to remain smoke-free for a day,” Knight said.
Student Health Services urges anyone to bring smoking related articles to help fill up the “Coughin Coffin.” Articles include newspaper, magazine, or any other media-type articles with nicotine content. Participants will receive a T-shirt, button or sticker as long as supplies last.
Participants are to collect cigarette butts, place them in a clear container with a lid and bring it to the Kick Butts Booth before noon. All participants must be part of an official ETSU organization. The student organization with the most butts will be awarded first prize. The first prize will be $100, second prize $50 and third prize $25.
Knight said cigarette butts are contaminated with bacteria and chemicals and provided important tips to remember while participating. Do not use unprotected hands to pick up or collect butts. Use gloves and tongs or some other utensil to collect them. Wash hands often and immediately after contact with any butts. ETSU and Student Health Services are not responsible for illness or injury associated with this event.
“In case of rain, Wellapalooza will try again on Friday at the same location,” Knight said. “If it rains on Friday, there will be a booth in the Culp Center. The exact location will be announced.”
Student Health Services needs help manning the booth, if interested contact Barbara Knight at 439-4500.
