After earning its third-straight Southern Conference North Division championship and a bye in the SoCon Tournament, the Southern Conference announced that Tim Smith has been selected by the conference’s sports information directors and the media as the SoCon freshman of the year, and Zakee Wadood made his second-straight appearance on the 10-player All-SoCon Team as selected by the league’s coaches and the media.
“This is quite an accomplishment for two fine players in our program,” ETSU head coach Ed DeChellis said. “Tim has played extremely well for us despite being a freshman, and for the past two years Zakee has been a key to our team’s success. I’m very proud of both of them.”
The 5-foot-9 Smith — who becomes only the third player in ETSU history to win this honor — is the league’s leading freshman scorer, averaging 14.4 points a contest. He currently ranks third in scoring for the Bucs, and is 18th in the nation with 2.5 steals per contest. The last Buccaneer to be named freshman of the year was ETSU great Greg Dennis in 1987-88.
Meanwhile, Wadood is currently second on the team with 14.5 points per game and leads the Bucs with 7.6 rebounds a contest. The 6-foot-5 forward is also third in the nation with 3.2 steals a game and leads the Bucs with 2.2 blocks per contest.
