Dear Editor
I would like to congratulate Marianne Steffey for a balanced and well-written article, “Columnist finds patriot in little brother.”
All too often public pronouncements regarding emotionally charged issues such as war are couched in pretty simplistic terms. If you have read any of the letters in the Johnson City Press that followed the article about a woman whose two sons followed different paths regarding military service, you know what I mean.
I have been reading the East Tennessean for nearly a quarter century (since my arrival on the faculty in the fall of 1979) and have watched with great satisfaction as it has steadily grown in sophistication and quality.
The editorial group of which you are a part is the best yet. Keep up the good work, and for those among you who are about to graduate, good luck in the future.
Thank you for what you do!
