While students during the school year reap a lot of assignments and red ink, there will be praise and honors only at the ETSU Communication Department Alumni and Student Awards Luncheon.
Awards, scholarships and internships will top the menu at noon Saturday, April 5, in Dining Room 3 of the Culp Center.
ETSU communication faculty and staff will recognize the accomplishments of advertising, broadcasting, journalism, public relations, speech and theatre students.
All students from the communication department are invited and encouraged to attend, said Dr. Charles Roberts, department chair.
Graduating seniors and students who receive awards will be honored with a meal “on the department,” while other students can join the celebration for $9.
“The most attractive aspect of the luncheon is we salute our graduating seniors for their achievements within the department and its different divisions,” Dr. Roberts said. “We’ve had events in the past honoring students, and we feel that the overall result has been a success.”
Awards are based on varying criteria, including overall grade point average, performance, creativity, leadership and special projects.
Last year, students received 12 scholarships, internships and cash awards, 13 general awards and the Broadcasting Tommy Awards.
Department awards include the Max Marshall Award for Outstanding Leadership, the Murvin H. Perry Creative Achievement Award, as well as outstanding student awards in each division.
According to Dr. Jack Mooney, the journalism-advertising-PR division head, the communication department has been recognizing student accomplishments since 1969, when the department was established.
Graduates of the department will be honored again this year in the 2nd annual Communication Department Alumni Hall of Fame.
Graduates from each of the department’s six divisions will be recognized for their professional accomplishments and community involvement.
All department alumni and former faculty are encouraged to attend and meet current students in the department.
