Dear Editor:
When I attended my first ETSU football game in 2002 I was astonished to see only 4,000 fans in attendance. Most of the fans were older people like me who struggled up and down the steep stairs and settled into seats with very little leg-room. This was a program that was hemorrhaging money and sure enough the following year the football program was dropped.
Dr. Stanton didn’t abolish football, it was abandoned by those 11,000 students who refused to attend the games. If they had attended as many games as Dr. Stanton did, we would still have football here.
In the near future, the students at this fine institution will have a chance to vote on funding a football team.
Any wagers on how that voting will go? Stay tuned!
